WWSF newsletter – May 2023

Happy Spring from WWSF Board

As the better weather approaches and we dig out our shorts and walking shoes, WWSF Board wishes you a very happy Spring. We are looking forward to a busy series of events towards the late Summer with our WWSF family day, the Weegie Budgie Charity open and of course WWSF Walk 11. The WWSF walking group has re-started and runs every second Wednesday from Roots & Fruits in Elphinstone (please contact Pamela at R&F for details).

We’re always on the look out for deserving causes across East Lothian that may benefit from our support. With the cost of living crisis, we all need to be alert to what is happening around us and to look after each other as best we can. We need you Scotters to be our eyes and ears, so if you hear or see things in our community that you think we can help with, please let us know.

WWSF Big Boys Brunch – a big success

We held our annual WWSF ‘Big Boys’ event in April. This year we welcomed the inimitable Tam Cowan as our main guest, hosted by the irrepressible Raymond Mearns. It was a wonderful afternoon full of fun, laughter and camaraderie. Our grateful thanks to our two fabulous speakers and to everyone who joined us on the day. The raffle books sold out in a flash and our closing auction items raised generous sums of money.  We are very luck to have a core of supporters who not only come along to our events but dig deep to raise funds for the Foundation.  Thank you all very much – your generosity will go a long way to improving outcomes for those in need in East Lothian. Finally our thanks go to our friends at Cockenzie Legion for hosting, Musselburgh RFC for its assistance and to Quinnsters bakery in Musselburgh for their support and delicious food.  Also to Babs and Julie for catering.

Events update – mark your diary for these WWSF events

The WWSF golf day ‘Weegie Budgie Open’ will take place on Friday 1 September at the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club. The cost is £300 entry for a team of 4, which includes food and entertainment and the chance to win some fantastic prizes.  Our thanks to Alex Brown of Ideal Flooring Solutions for his generous sponsorship. We have set up a separate Facebook page for this event – please check it out (we have a few spaces left for teams).

Our annual WWSF Walk has been moved from the traditional May date to Saturday 9 September. The walk will start and finish at Cockenzie Legion and will be shortened this year to make it suitable for everyone to be able to participate. A dedicated Facebook event page has been set up – please check it out.

On Saturday 12 August we plan to host a WWSF family afternoon of live music and fun in the gardens at Cockenzie House.

Our end of year Scotter’s dance is pencilled in for November 2023 – details to follow.
